Topic of the lecture:

Aligners & Airway Space - The Role of the Orthodontist

Abstract:

Orthodontic treatment using clear aligners has gained immense popularity due to its aesthetic and functional advantages. However, beyond the traditional focus on dental alignment and occlusion, there is a growing recognition of the significant role orthodontists play in managing airway space. This abstract explores the intersection of aligner therapy and airway health, highlighting the critical responsibilities of orthodontists in this domain.
Clear aligners, while primarily designed to correct malocclusions, can influence the orofacial structure in ways that impact the airway. The orthodontist’s expertise is crucial in identifying patients at risk of airway compromise and developing treatment plans that address these concerns. This involves a thorough understanding of the anatomical and functional aspects of the airway, as well as the potential effects of orthodontic interventions.
In this presentation, we will discuss:
    •    The anatomical relationship between dental structures and airway space.
    •    How aligner therapy can affect airway dimensions and function.
    •    Diagnostic tools and techniques for assessing airway space in orthodontic patients.
    •    Case studies illustrating successful management of airway issues with aligners.
    •    Interdisciplinary approaches involving orthodontists, sleep specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
By integrating airway considerations into orthodontic practice, clinicians can enhance patient outcomes not only in terms of dental health but also in overall respiratory function and quality of life. This presentation aims to equip orthodontists with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of aligner therapy and airway management, ultimately improving patient care.
